The mayor of San Javier, José Miguel Luengo today highlighted the fact that local cooperatives such as Hortamira currently dedicate 60 percent of their production to organic farming with the goal of reaching 100 percent, during the visit he made with the counselor of Water, Agriculture, Livestock and Fishing, Ángel del Amor to one of the ecological cultivation plots of the cooperative of El Mirador, in the Villaperejil estate.

During the visit to one of the greenhouses endowed with high agricultural technology, the technical director of Hortamira, José Simón Fructuoso showed the operation of the meters of the depth of humidity in the earth to control the irrigation which allows to optimize the use of water and avoid deep sediment transport.

The greenhouse visited, dedicated to the cultivation of peppers, also has a system of water collection that is mixed with the transfer, among other environmental practices of organic farming.

Santiago Martínez, president of FECOAM that participated in the visit with a group of cooperative farmers, recalled that the change of production model to organic farming began many years ago in the area and stressed that "the agricultural sector is already doing its homework "to demand that" the other sectors do the same ".

The counselor Ángel del Amor highlighted in his visit to El Mirador that the ecological agriculture project of the Region of Murcia "is paying off" and pointed to Hortamira as "an example of environmental practices carried to the maximum exponent".

The counselor recalled that the Campo de Cartagena hosts 3,407 hectares of organic farming, of which about 900 corresponds to the Mar Menor.

The Ministry supports with ecological help lines to 40 farms of Campo de Cartagena, located in a vulnerable area and noted that the ultimate goal "is to further extend a code of good agricultural practices, carrying out a sustainable agriculture and respectful of the environment and helping to prevent desertification as a result of climate change. "

The mayor of San Javier José Miguel Luengo also stressed the effort of the farmers of the municipality to take advantage of "every drop of water".

Luengo remarked that "in the municipality the farmers are prepared to obtain the best yields with very little water" and reiterated their support to the farmers "in their demands for water, their request that the transfers and the desalination plants not be touched as a measure complementary. "
