Ecologistas en Acción presents a project to create a wetland that promotes biodiversity in the former treatment plant of the Mar Menor campsite, next to La Hita (23/08/2018)

The Ecologists in Action association has presented today in the City of San Javier a project of environmental restoration next to the Mar Menor, in the area between the Camping Mar Menor and the natural setting of the beach of La Hita, in a meeting in which the mayor of San Javier, José Miguel Luengo, the general director of Environment and Mar Menor, Antonio Luengo and the new owners of the campsite that is in the rehabilitation phase have participated.

Juan Carlos Blanco, technician of Ecologists in Action explained that the project contemplates the elimination of the old treatment plant of the camping, at the moment in disuse and its reconversion in a hypersaline lagoon that foments the biodiversity and the recovery of species in danger of extinction like the fartet, the curassow, or the gray-winged teal, a duck in danger of extinction that inhabited the area.

Juan Carlos Blanco pointed out that this wetland, in addition to promoting biodiversity and being a pedagogical resource, would be a complement to the new tourism project carried out in the campsite, increasing the safety of the facilities and of the people by exercising as a natural barrier against to fires that periodically occur in the area of ​​La Hita, next to the campsite.

The general director of Environment and Mar Menor, Antonio Luengo considered the project, which would require an investment of 40,000 euros, "very interesting because it also contributes to the recovery of the Mar Menor."

Luengo said that in addition to contributing to the recovery of the Mar Menor environment through the recovery of the natural habitats of the lagoon, the wetland proposed by Ecologists in Action would favor the correct maintenance of the annex area of ​​La Hita, which acts as a natural filter for the Mar Menor.

The mayor of San Javier José Miguel Luengo was also favorable to the project, considering that it is complemented with the business project, already underway, to rehabilitate the campsite and turn it into a quality tourist resource.

José Miguel Luengo stressed the importance of having in the environment with natural values ​​such as the new wetland with La Hita as added attractions to the tourism project, which according to its promoters will involve an investment of 500,000 euros in the improvement of existing facilities with quality criteria , creating a fortnight of jobs.

The project of the new wetland that favors biodiversity in the area requires the approval of the owners of the campsite to be in the old treatment plant of the facilities, and already has the approval of the Office of Socioeconomic Promotion of the Environment.

Its construction and commissioning would amount to 40,000 euros that are intended to be financed through grants, aid and the support of administrations, recalls the representative of Ecologists in Action who was confident of its upcoming materialization.
