San Javier joins the European project "Global education starts in your municipality" (19/10/2018)

The Department of Youth coordinates the participation of San Javier in the international project "Global education begins in your municipality" for which it has been selected along with four other municipalities in the Region of Murcia by the Lorca Cazalla Multicultural Association, Spanish partner of this project financed by the Europe Aid program of the European Commission, which also includes institutions from Bulgaria, Cyprus, Slovenia and Lithuania.

The working group formed by the Department of Youth with the voluntary participation of associations, entities and interested individuals is already working on the first phase of the project, which has a duration of three years, focused on three of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (ODS) ): Gender equality, sustainable cities and communities, and responsible production and consumption.

Among the actions that will be carried out, related to sustainability and the environment, is the creation in San Javier of a center for native plants of the Mar Menor, for which different locations are being considered after the meeting held yesterday at the City Council for the different members of the work team and Councilor for Youth, Masegosa Estíbaliz with the Councilor for Parks and Gardens, María Dolores Ruiz and staff of the Department of Environment who joined the initiative.

The idea consists of planting a complete catalog of native plants in an area bounded in a park or green area of the municipality where they can be recognized and studied globally.

Together with this initiative, others are prepared such as a photography contest related to the project's objectives, an intergenerational meeting, the elaboration and screening of a series of documentaries focused on Women and healthy relationships, and others with the involvement of institutions such as the CAVI or IES "Ruiz de Alda" through his Bachelor of Arts.

The project that develops in different phases over three years has among its objectives to raise awareness among citizens of small towns, and especially among young people, of the local and global dimensions of the Sustainable Development Goals, generate and promote new approaches to involve young people in global issues and develop the capacity of youth leaders in small towns.

It also aims to promote understanding of the interconnection between developing countries and the European Union in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
