The Community recovers the mill "El Maestre" of San Javier (21/02/2019)

The Ministry of Tourism and Culture recovers the windmill of water 'El Maestre' of San Javier, cataloged as an Asset of Cultural Interest, which has had an investment of 80,000 euros by the Community for its rehabilitation and restoration.

The General Director of Cultural Assets, Juan Antonio Lorca, together with the Mayor of San Javier, José Miguel Luengo, visited the works that are in their final phase today.

The intervention is destined to recover its original appearance, reconstructing the spire and the vanes, of which it lacked, and also working on its internal and external covering, which will guarantee the preservation of this construction dated between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the XX, Juan Antonio Lorca explained.

He also noted that from the regional government "we work to convert our artistic and historical heritage in an important claim within cultural tourism and an example of revitalization of the economy and preservation of our history and identity."

In this regard, he added, "windmills are emblematic buildings that characterize the landscape of the region and whose recovery and enhancement we promote from Culture, in collaboration with the municipalities, promoting joint work between administrations."

The mills are a common construction in the area of Mar Menor and throughout the field of Cartagena, where the low depth of the water table was used to extract water and channel it to the irrigation areas.

In total, in the Region of Murcia there are 221 windmills in 14 municipalities, of which 205 are owned by private individuals and 16 are municipal.

The Ministry has financed in recent years actions for the conservation and protection of the saline mills of Quintín and La Calcetera of San Pedro del Pinatar and subsidies are already approved for the restoration of the Mill of Las Piedras, in Cartagena, and the Mill of Farroco or de la Viuda, in Torre Pacheco.

The windmills of the Region of Murcia and the landscapes associated with their surroundings "are fundamental for the protection and recovery of the historical memory of the population in which it is inserted and to which it belongs", said Juan Antonio Lorca.

For this reason, the Ministry finalizes the Master Plan of the Wind Mills of the Region of Murcia, framed in the Strategic Plan of the Cultural Heritage of the Region of Murcia.

Performances

The actions for the rehabilitation and partial restoration of the mill 'El Maestre' of San Javier are consisting of the cleaning of the surrounding land, as well as the debris both inside and outside the building.

Also, the masonry wall is reconstructed (compact and unworked limestone) and it is verified that there are no direct filtrations or by capillarity, repairing the cracks, making the coverings, repairing the pavement and replacing the carpentry, among other actions.

Once the roof truss is fixed, the spire roof will be covered by a board deck of wooden boards, and the blades of the mill will also be made of national pine wood.

Finally, on the existing, new and repaired wooden elements, a fungicidal and bactericidal paint will be applied that will contribute to its protection.
