The Minister of Culture, Tourism and Environment, Javier Celdrán and the Mayor of San Javier José Miguel Luengo presented today in San Javier the rehabilitation works of the windmill "El Maestre", a building qualified as an Asset of Cultural Interest and in evident state of deterioration that will recover its original appearance with the incorporation of the spire and the blades that it lacks at present.

The works, which will involve an investment of 80,000 euros, financed by the regional government, will be tendered in February with a deadline of two months, as announced by Mayor José Miguel Luengo who stressed the importance of the project for the recovery of memory and the local tradition.

The architect who drafted the project for the rehabilitation of the building qualified as an Asset of Cultural Interest, José María López explained that the works will consist in the cleaning of the "trunk" of the mill, which is the only part of the building standing, with the use of traditional techniques .

Likewise, the interior staircase and an upper floor will be recovered, as well as the spire and the blades.

The counselor Javier Celdrán pointed out the cultural and touristic value of this action for the recovery of these patrimonial icons of the area and the Region of Murcia that, together with two other mills in Torre Pacheco and Cartagena, have advanced to the Master Plan Windmills in which the Ministry works with the Ministry of Culture to address the recovery of more than 200 existing mills in the Region.

The mayor of San Javier José Miguel Luengo highlighted "the historical heritage recovery of the municipality" that will mean the rehabilitation works of the windmill originally conceived for the extraction of water for irrigation "so it also serves as a tribute to the agriculture of the area "

The mill dates from the late nineteenth or early twentieth century and is characteristic of the coastal area of the Mar Menor where they were common in order to extract water from the subsoil, given the low depth of the water table, to irrigate dry land .

The mill "El Maestre", owned by the municipality, was located on an agricultural property in the place that currently occupies the parking area of what was the Hispania open shopping center and whose new owners have named "Molino Plaza", in honor of the building cataloged with Monument category.
