Palacios requests the City of San Javier to fulfill its commitments not to delay the opening of the Hospital of Los Arcos (04/05/2010)

The Municipality of San Javier has complied with the commitments made in 2006 for the provision of electricity, water, sewer and access in the new Hospital del Mar Menor

The Minister of Health, María Ángeles Palacios, today asked the City of San Javier expeditiously in proceedings that are yet to meet in order to avoid a possible delay in the opening of the new Hospital of Los Arcos del Mar Menor.

Palacios made this request in statements to the media during a visit to the new hospitals in Cartagena and Mar Menor, which was accompanied by MPs and the Regional Assembly President Francisco Celdran.

The counselor reported the delay of a year in the various commitments made by the City of San Javier to build access and provide the building with electricity, water and sewer as fully ratified the City Council in 2006.

The building housing the future Hospital of Los Arcos del Mar Menor is completed since December 2009, and the testing phase will start soon "but now your home depends on the City of San Javier," said the minister.

The opening date of the Hospital of Los Arcos could be altered because, he said, "the Hall has not complied with the commitments made in 2006."

Palacios explained that the land was yet to provide it with services, and lamented that "the greatest hit of this situation may be the citizens of San Pedro, San Javier, Los Alcazares and Torre Pacheco."

The Minister said he does not know the reasons why the City Council has not fulfilled its obligations and reiterated that "the delay has created an additional cost of four million euros to the construction company, a circumstance that prompted the company responsibilities City Hall.

Palacios called the Consistory to accelerate the relevant procedures, because "it is essential to have light and water to start installation testing equipment."

The Minister congratulated the construction company has fully complied with the deadlines, and highlighted the work of Giscarmsa, who has asked in the past year on countless occasions the City Council to fulfill its commitments to meet deadlines.

Cartagena hospital

The Head of Health said in Cartagena, during a visit to the new Hospital of St. Lucia, that "the construction of the new hospital Cartagena are well advanced and in the coming months during the summer, begin testing the transfer and installation" .

According to Palacios, the installation of equipment is a task "more difficult" but "if all goes well the hospital could open in October or November this year."

He added that this new healthcare infrastructure, "will feature the latest technology to provide the best care possible and to minimize energy consumption and ensure cost savings."

The Minister stressed that the University Hospital of Santa Lucia is scaled according to the demands of the population and taking into account the special characteristics of the new area of Cartagena, which will be the most absorbant and the only population that has two hospitals also a reference to the area of the Mar Menor in many services.

The Minister outlined the reasons why, in his view, should not unfold the Cartagena Health Area II, as "would condemn the region to anchor in the area of Health, when we wanted to make a firm and ambitious for Cartagena health care. "

Palacios explained that "the best hospital is the most activity is and the one with greater possibilities to investigate," and recalled that "the average in Spain for an area of over 400,000 inhabitants health, and that major hospitals in the country attend large urban areas, a population sufficient to develop as a great hospital. "

"That's what we want for Santa Lucia and all Cartagena, a reference hospital, while retaining the Rosell as a second hospital in the area," he concluded.

Palacios appreciated the efforts made by all those who helped to build the new hospital in Cartagena and Los Arcos in the Mar Menor, and said that, if all goes well, both hospitals will open before year end.
