ANSE ring more than 1700 migratory birds on island grosa (04/05/2010)

From 25 March until Saturday 01 May, a team of bird banders Naturalists Association of Southeast has worked tirelessly Grosa Island (tm San Javier), compared to La Manga del Mar Menor, studying the way prenuptial migration of birds, from African soil, fly toward the central and northern Europe.

After 45 days of study were captured and later released 2102 birds of 41 different species of which have been ringed for the first time 1708.

The most abundant fly has been the musical, with 837 birds banded and is also abundant and capirotada Sardinian warbler, or the common fly and more with over 100 birds each.

Among the latest catch highlights of the Warbler on April 25 that carried forwards ring with Norway.

A bird of only 10 g weight was from Norway to Africa and is now back north.

This is the second foreign recovery of the season and first in Norway in Isla Grossa although last year captured one individual of this species from Sweden.

The results will be included in the "project Piccole Isole" ringing in small Mediterranean islands, involving many different banding stations bordering countries, and aims to study the migration of European passerines.

Work Grosa Island have been made by ringers and collaborators, mainly ANSE, completely voluntary, and has received authorization from the General Directorate of Natural Heritage and Biodiversity in the Region of Murcia, which provides facilities and transportation to the island.

Grosa island has been declared a Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA) and is an exceptional place to study migration.

Due to its geographical location, close to Cabo de Palos, many birds use the island as a resting place during their migrations to be the first site available to sighted land after crossing the sea MEDITERRANEAN.

The banding is the identification of birds by placing a metal ring on one leg.

This ring has a number as an ID and a return contact.

This method can obtain very valuable birds as migration routes or rates of survival.

ANSE similar banding campaigned in 2007 and 2009, where 4165 birds were captured 55 species, of which 3435 were banded for the first time while the rest were already banded.

About 80% of these birds are small trans-Saharan migrants that barely reach 20 grams.

ANSE tries to make this work for several years since this series of long-term data, analyzed together with all the stations of the Piccole Isole project ", provide insights into the migration of birds and the evolution of their populations.
