Meeting with La Cuadra de Sevilla on the occasion of the performance of "Quejío" on Friday, August 17 (17/08/2018)

The guitarist Jaime Burgos, who was part of the original cast of "Quejío", is especially grateful to Salvador Távora for the fact that he has rescued him from the tablaos of Seville where he earns his living "to do real flamenco, pure flamenco" in the replacement of this mythical show of La Cuadra de Sevilla.

That distortion of the vision of flamenco, tragic in essence but projected as something cheerful and festive, hovered in the head of Salvador Távora when in his head began to take shape "Quejío", a work that unknowingly then, was reserving a place preferred among the most creative playwrights of Spanish theater.

Távora, whose state of health has not allowed her to travel to San Javier, lamented Lilyane Drillon, her assistant director who this morning participated in a meeting with the public held at the City Hall of San Javier, devised a show in which flamenco, In a natural way, he will express the anger, the oppression and the desire for freedom, in his denunciation of the Andalusian peasants.

"Quejío" marked a before and after in the vision of flamenco at the beginning of the 70s as noted by the flamencologist Félix Grande, recalls Lilyane Drillon, because she moved away from flamenco and postcard Andalusia to show what flamenco as a language was for him.

Drillon considers "Quejío" as a classic "because like the Greek tragedies he talks about something intimate of the human being and not of what surrounds him".

That's why when they turned 45 they considered the replacement of this work "with which we want to make people think" in a very different sociological and historical moment in which everything is much easier and seems to require less effort.

The denunciation of Távora, that managed to pass the censorship although it did not get rid of the denunciations before the Police of the public that saw its premiere in Madrid, materialized in scene with three big jerrycans full of stone to which three men are chained that during all the show pulls them without advancing, singing and dancing with their hands tied.

The union of their forces will be the only thing that finally makes them advance in their inhuman effort.

The replacement of "Quejío" is absolutely faithful to the original with absence of technology, without microphones, stick, although this time true bulbs are used.

The originals were homemade made with an aluminum cone and a 100 watt bulb, recalls Drillon.

The cast was an initial problem because the original "speakers" were not artists but humble and punished for life that took out the rage contained in "Quejío", according to Lilyane who is satisfied with the new cast "who also retains a certain claiming character ".

"The theater of Salvador is a theater of emotions" says Lilyane to explain the resounding success of "Quejío" abroad.

After its premiere in Madrid and before the denunciations it received, the work was presented in Paris before 3,000 people in the Grand Amphitheater of La Sorbonne.

"The darkness and the noise of a chain dragged in the beginning of the work made an enormous silence that did not break until the end of the show in which the audience exploded in applause" remembers Drillon that afternoon, in the middle of the birth of La Cuadra , thanks to the contracts that gave them a year of work in which they took "Quejío" all over the world.

"Quejío" was represented from February 15, 1972 to March 1, 75 a total of 748 times, of which only 26 was in Andalusia, notes with some sorrow Lilyane Drillon although it recognizes the lack of theatrical infrastructure that Andalusia had in that moment.

It was not the same in Catalonia where they represented it up to 171 times, with a season of five months in a row.

Lilyane Drillon has had some special words for the Festival of San Javier "where we have come with all the shows of La Cuadra".

He also recalled the tribute received by Salvador Távora in San Javier, a Festival to which he has a special affection and would have liked to return, he said.

His physical weakness does not correspond to his head for which a new project is already around, said his assistant director for many years sure that he would be thrilled to give him the hug that he sent a fan to the theater and admirer present in the audience.

The director of the Festival, David Martínez, did not hesitate to count on La Cuadra when he heard the "Quejío" rerouting tour, he explained during the meeting, "and especially because since I have been at the Festival, there are many fans who have asked for the return of this beloved company in San Javier.
