San Javier becomes one of the first municipalities in the Region to start the feline colonies (21/06/2019)

The mayor José Miguel Luengo and the president of the association "Gatúnicos", Aranzazu Sanchez have signed today in the City a collaboration agreement for the start-up and maintenance of feline colonies in the municipality of San Javier with which it is intended to control the existing populations of unidentified cats living on the street.

The initiative, one of the pioneers of the Region of Murcia and the rest of the country, will be governed by the CER project, of capture, sterilization and return to origin of feral cats (not domestic) in the municipality.

The CER project is considered the most ethical and effective way to manage the urban feline colonies, since it avoids their reproduction and facilitates their control while gradually decreasing, explained Aranzazu Sánchez.

The mayor, José Miguel Luengo said that this agreement is in tune with the sensitivity to animal welfare of the City of San Javier that will assume the sanitary and health expenses of the colonies that are created while the "Gatúnicos" association, through volunteering, will take care of its maintenance.

The capture and transfer to the veterinary centers of the municipality that collaborate in the project will be borne by the animal collection service hired by the City Council.

After the signing of the agreement, the Councilor for Health, Isidoro Miñano visited with Aranzazu Sanchez the first colony that is being mounted on the grounds of the Municipal Waste Management Center, where those cats who can not continue in their place of origin will be moved in cases such as closeness to a school or public center where they may cause health problems or be in danger.

The signing of the agreement ratified today supposes the immediate start-up of this initiative of gradual development with which San Javier fulfills the objective of zero sacrifice included in the Regional Law of Animal Welfare, explained the mayor José Miguel Luengo who recalled that respect to animals and the improvement of healthy coexistence between citizens and urban cats is the ultimate goal of this project.
