The director general of the Mar Menor, Miriam Pérez checks the cleaning work of the Mar Menor in Santiago de la Ribera (18/09/2019)

The general director of the Mar Menor, Miriam Pérez Albaladejo visited Santiago de la Ribera this morning accompanied by the Councilor for Public Services, María Dolores Ruiz, and the Councilor for Tourism and Beaches, Antonio Martínez to check the work of cleaning and extracting solid waste dragged by the flood to the Mar Menor.

Miriam Pérez said that this is the first urgent action in the lagoon for which the cleaning and machinery workforce that have already begun to extract containers, vehicles and ships sunk in the sea have been reinforced.

Miriam Pérez Albaladejo pointed out that it is still too early to assess the effects of flooding in the Mar Menor and explained other actions under way to reach a diagnosis of the situation as thorough and detailed as possible.

In this regard, he informed that samples are being collected to continuously analyze the waters, in collaboration with IMYDA, UPCT and UMU.

The loss of salinity is also analyzed by the contribution of fresh water and the rise in the water table that increases nitrate, chlorophyll and turbidity levels.

"We still don't know the effects that all this will have on the Mar Menor," said the CEO, Miriam Pérez.

Drones, satellites, AGA and IMYDA are providing aerial images that facilitate a more detailed and complete diagnosis, for which citizen collaboration has also been requested to share particular images or videos on the online platform enabled for that purpose at www.canalmarmenor .is

The Councilor for Tourism and Beaches, Antonio Martínez thanked the speed of the Regional Government in the action for the recovery of the Mar Menor and the beaches as soon as possible and the commitment of the three administrations to achieve it.

The mayor of Tourism referred to the situation of the tourism sector after the floods and recalled that the Plenary has requested the declaration of catastrophic zone that provides not only aid for material damage but also for loss of business as has happened in the sector.
