The Plenary of San Javier approves a joint motion of all political groups on the recovery of the Mar Menor (14/11/2019)

The Plenary Session of the City Council of San Javier today approved a joint motion of all political groups for the recovery of the Mar Menor in which a series of measures are proposed aimed at the Government of the Region of Murcia and the Government of Spain that are requested with urgency that they proceed to assume their competences in the Plan Poured Plan 0, increasing the means of the Segura Hydrographic Confederation for its execution.

The agreement includes the declaration of the recovery of the Mar Menor as a matter of "preferential interest" for the City Council of San Javier, committing, within its powers, to promote and collaborate in all initiatives and projects aimed at this objective.

The motion was dealt with in urgent matters after previously leaving on the table the motions that the Popular, Socialist and Citizen groups had presented on the same line, which have been recast into a single text to which the Mixed and Vox municipal groups have joined .

The agreement approved today asks the Government of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia to urgently elaborate the Decree-Law of Comprehensive Protection of the Mar Menor and to review and adapt current urban, tourism and agricultural policies.

Likewise, it is requested that the guidelines set by Law 1/2018 on Urgent Measures of the Mar Menor be strictly enforced and that an extraordinary regional plan for the recovery of the Mar Menor be developed, assuming the measures of the Spill Plan 0 that are autonomous.

The motion includes the precautionary suspension of all urban developments that directly or indirectly affect the Mar Menor, with the exception of the natural extension of consolidated urban cases, with respect to the urban rights acquired by individuals, promoting the adaptation of the plans to the official cartography of danger and flood risk.

Among other measures, the motion asks the regional government to prepare a report on the operation of storm tanks and stormwater network and to carry out the necessary actions to prevent the extinction of threatened species, including the possible transfer of specimens .

It also requests the creation of a plan, in collaboration with the Fishermen's Association of San Pedro del Pinatar, of direct aid to the fishing sector of the Mar Menor along with a campaign to recover the image of the products of the Mar Menor.

Similarly, the development of an economic adaptation plan to the sectors affected by the socio-ecological crisis of the Mar Menor is requested to compensate for damage to the Costa Cálida-Region of Murcia brand.

In the statement of reasons for the motion, in which there is a historical review of the latest events in the Mar Menor, it is emphasized that "cooperation and coordination become indispensable in a matter of such urgency and magnitude, so that we understand the collaboration of the Regional Administration with the Ministry of Ecological Transition and with the affected municipalities to join forces and implement structural solutions that allow the recovery of the Mar Menor, which today is in a situation of climatic emergency ".
