Luengo points out that rainwater channeling works underway and planned in the municipality by the CCAA and the City Council, which exceed 5 million euros, cannot absorb the coming of the ramblas and requires the State "commitment and budget" to act upstream

The mayor of San Javier, José Miguel Luengo, affirmed today that "the Rambla de Cobatillas does not fit in a pipeline" after demanding an urgent action from the State in the upper areas of the Ramblas.

At a press conference, after chairing the meeting to assess the storm in the municipality, José Miguel Luengo recalled that the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia and the City of San Javier have several works and projects underway worth more than five million of euros to manage the water that falls in San Javier although he warned that these works cannot absorb the flow of the waterways that cross the municipality.

Luengo demanded "real commitments with budget" for the realization of these works that were already included in the Poured Plan 0 through a study of the City Council itself that collects 14 containment dams and other complementary measures that laminate the waters and prevent their flowing arrival to the municipality and the Mar Menor.

Among the measures underway in the municipality, the mayor recalled the rainwater canalization works in the Pescadores neighborhood with an investment close to 700,000 euros.

He also informed that the City Council has requested from the General Water Directorate an extension of the conduction capacity of the so-called Rambla de Macodesa, which will go from a return time of 10 to 50 years.

The reinforcement works include a modification of the slope that will prevent the flow to Jabalina Street as it has happened in this last storm.

The mayor stressed the importance of the North and South collectors of San Javier, whose works already have the report of favorable environmental impact, with which the waters coming from the north area such as the Macodesa promenade, Los Ríos neighborhood, avenue will be managed Mar Menor, Pescadores neighborhood, and the South zone, such as the surroundings of the Tanatorio and Neptuno avenue, converging both at Cape Roche, from where it will lead to a reservoir in the area of the former treatment plant.

In addition, other complementary measures have been articulated, such as the use of the Vereda del Vinco, whose demarcation has already begun, such as a 20-meter open-air channel, which will relieve the southern part of the municipality such as Ramón y Cajal Avenue.

Likewise, the City Council and AGA jointly study other rainwater evacuation solutions such as the authorization of a flooding environmental tank inside the military compound, which would contribute to protecting the urban fabric.

On the effects of the storm, "which exceeded the official forecasts," the mayor said that now the highest priority is focused on the cleaning of mud and trawls in streets and public roads of the municipality where the services have been working since the last hours municipal to which four forest teams and four firefighters have been added, helped by six brush sweeping machines that the City Council has contracted to restore normalcy as soon as possible.

Luengo recalled that navigation on the Estacio canal remains closed until the submarine cable that has floated by the currents is repaired.

He also announced that the problem of shortage of drinking water in La Manga, which was temporarily recovered with the Potalmenor service from Cartagena, has been due to a break in the general network at polygon O that is expected to be solved today in order to restore Supply normally.

Of the eleven roads that closed to traffic yesterday, only the road of the old airport remains closed this morning.

The emergency services had to carry out about 50 bailouts of vehicles trapped in the water, while no rescue notices were recorded in homes or drains due to flooding, through the emergency telephone.

The large destruction of beaches overlap with those of the last December storm that did not get repaired by the State Coasts Demarcation, competent in the matter, explained the mayor.
