The Dragon Boat Inclusive team awarded at the Sports Gala (30/01/2020)

It is the first mixed team with people with intellectual disabilities that participates, after 18 editions, in some European Dragon Boat Championships

The Dragon Boat Inclusive team formed by athletes with intellectual disabilities of the Aidemar Sports Club and inclusive athletes of the Pinatarense Sports Association has received recognition of their successes at the III UFDRM Sports Gala held yesterday Wednesday January 29 and organized by the Federation Union Sports of the Region of Murcia-UFDRM.

The prize was awarded by President D. Jose Zomeño of the Sports Federation for People with Intellectual Disabilities of the Region of Murcia-FEDEMIPS to the club for the important sporting milestone that supposed that for the first time in Spain and in Europe the participation took place of an inclusive team with people with intellectual disabilities in the European Championships of this sport.

The inclusive dragon boat team, launched in January 2019, consists of 50% of people with intellectual disabilities and 50% of people without any type of disability.

The characteristics of this sport, where the coordination of the entire team of paddlers is essential makes it an ideal sport for inclusion.

Despite the short time he has been working, the team, thanks to the dedication and effort of all its paddlers, has achieved a milestone for regional sport: he won 3 bronze medals in the recent European dragon boat championships held last month of August 2019 in Seville.

The DRAGON BOAT INCLUSIVE project, which arises thanks to the great involvement of the Pinatarense Sports Association that is committed to the implementation of support networks that help the visibility of those without their help would be even more complex to carry out inclusive sport.

From the Aidemar Sports Club, its president Pedro J. Sánchez affirms that "the most important thing for our group is to have the support of clubs that are committed to inclusion and provide us with the day to day to work in disciplines that without their support would be impossible , and luckily in the region of the Mar Menor, more and more clubs are opening their doors. "

On the other hand, Sonia Martínez, President of the Pinatarense Sports Association, is proud of the recognition of "this project that we have started with the Aidemar Sports Club trusting that it helps to consolidate it, since at the sports and personal level of the members of our club it is a huge gratification to share moments, efforts and illusions with these people with intellectual disabilities but with great personal dignity "
