The family of the sculptor and painter José Julián Buhígues donates a sculpture of the Sanjaviereño artist to the City Council (21/02/2020)

The family of the sculptor, painter and gallery owner José Julián Buhígues has donated to the City of San Javier a sculpture of the Sanjaviereño artist who died in 2011, which yesterday was presented publicly by Mayor José Miguel Luengo, the Councilor for Culture, David Martínez and the sisters of the artist, Pilar and Concha Buhígues.

The work, a male nude of two meters, was presented in the lobby of the San Javier City Hall where it will remain exposed.

It is a sculpture in fiberglass, previously modeled in mud, reminiscent of the extremely elongated and stylized figures of the Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti, said David Martinez in the presentation of the work.

David Martínez baptized the work, which the author did not titled, with the name of "Horizon" because of the attitude of the figure that remains hieratic between the martial greeting and the gaze to the horizon.

Mayor José Miguel Luengo thanked the relatives of José Julián Buhígues for the donation "to the town of San Javier" of the work of the artist born in San Javier in 1955. Luengo recalled and praised the career of José Julián, author of the sculpture of the "Puerta del Mar" square, which can be seen at the entrance of Santiago de la Ribera.

The love for San Javier and his commitment to Culture is what moved the sisters of José Julián Buhígues to donate the work whose welcome they thanked the municipal authorities and the audience.

José Julián Buhígues graduated in the specialty of sculpture as number one of his promotion at the San Carlos School of Fine Arts in Valencia, where he arrived after studying Magisterium in Murcia, moved by the passion for art he had demonstrated since childhood.

One of his first works was the sculpture-fountain of the Puerta del Mar square, which he commissioned from the City Council of San Javier.

Also in the municipality you can see a cubist mural that he made in an altruistic way for the "Joaquín Carrión" school where he practiced as a teacher.

Many families of San Javier and private collectors keep their works both sculptures and paintings and drawings.

At the end of his life he devoted himself to antiques and the art gallery he opened in Murcia while serving as an art consultant in various galleries and national auction houses.

The Ramón Gaya Museum in Murcia saves part of the work that Buhígues had acquired in Paris from the Murcian painter Pedro Flores and donated to the Murcian museum.
