The mayor of San Javier, José Miguel Luengo, met today in Alicante with the mayor of the city, Luis Barcala, with whom he visited the flooded urban park "La Marjal", a multifunctional green space, considered as an example of hydraulic infrastructure to contain urban floods, in order to know its operation and its possible implementation in key places of the municipality such as the Peri de Telefónica, in San Javier.

Accompanied by the Councilor for Public Services, María Dolores Ruiz and a team of municipal technicians, the mayor of San Javier visited the park next to the mayor of Alcantarilla, Joaquín Buendía and the mayor of Alicante, Luis Barcala who transferred the benefits that the infrastructure He has reported to the city and its inhabitants to the floods.

During the visit they were guided by the technical manager of "La Marjal" who detailed the operation and advantages offered by this infrastructure considered by the OECD as an example of the solution of urban floods, among many other official acknowledgments.

The park, which was already tested in 2017, collecting 15,000 cubic meters, saving the tourist area of Playa de San Juan from the flood, occupies 3.6 hectares of flood surface capable of collecting up to 45,000 cubic meters of water.

It also has two collectors located on the avenues that are usually flooded to collect the water they carry to the park's ponds.

Subsequently, the water contained by the park is channeled for purification and subsequent reuse for irrigation areas or lake filling.

Likewise, the park becomes a green area and a meeting point for families and young people as well as serving as a refuge for native vegetation and bird species.

The mayor of San Javier José Miguel Luengo pointed out the need to find solutions to the floods that the municipality suffers and considered that the flood park can be of great help in the municipality of San Javier in strategic places such as the Peri de Telefónica through which it circulates the Rambla de Macodesa in episodes of torrential rains, so the adoption in San Javier of this type of infrastructure is currently being studied.
