The PSOE of San Javier proposes the implementation of a municipal program against loneliness of the elderly (01/10/2020)

Coinciding with the International Day of the Elderly, the Socialist councilor Aurora Izquierdo has suggested that the City Council implement intergenerational initiatives to prevent a significant part of the 6,000 elderly living in the municipality from being alone. The councilor of the PSOE of San Javier Aurora Izquierdo has proposed on the International Day of the Elderly (celebrated by the UN on October 1) that the City of San Javier launch a program against loneliness of the elderly, in the framework of the Plan for the Elderly with which the municipality should adhere to the network of Friendly Cities for the Third Age.Izquierdo recalled that "San Javier has more than 6,000 elderly people and some of those soldiers who have been studying here, or vacationers who long for that moment of retirement in this land, become widowed and are left alone, which becomes one of the great problems that our elders have.

"In this sense, the socialist mayor has suggested that "in the Plan for the Elderly that has to be started, the diversity of loneliness must be taken into account, moving from 'doing by' to 'doing with', fostering neighborhood relations, … With this also the associationism, promoting intergenerational exchange working with the Youth Council-,… ".In addition, it proposes "preserving access to the educational system", specifically in San Javier "to the Language School and the Conservatory, as new students or support teachers and volunteers".

"We must also draw networks of interdependence and not a caregiver and a caring subject.

For this we must break down both architectural and social barriers and build community ties," adds Izquierdo. With senior centers closed due to the pandemic, a neighborhood program is neededFrom the socialist municipal group they point out that "now, in the middle of the pandemic, with the centers for the elderly closed, more than ever we need awareness and promotion of a neighborhood and district program, which encourages these neighbors to interdependence networks, consisting in working together with neighbors, shops, pharmacies, volunteers and entities.

And the problem of unwanted loneliness is invisible and for this reason we must encourage institutions to do proactive work for our elders ".Izquierdo recalls that "studies show that social isolation and loneliness increase the risk of many diseases, from cardiovascular diseases to cognitive deterioration, as well as increase depressive and anxiety symptoms.

This causes a worse well-being and quality of life in women.

old people".
