| The mayor of San Javier, José Miguel Luengo presented, in Ponte de Sor, the project "San Javier, city of the air" , origin of the twinning between the two municipalities united by their historical links with aviation | The mayor of San Javier José Miguel Luengo and the deputy mayor Rubén Pérez presented yesterday in the Portuguese municipality of Ponte de Sor, with which San Javier has just twinned, the brand "San Javier, ciudad del aire", a municipal project of Tourist and economic revitalization of the municipality based on its aeronautical tradition, which finds in the Portuguese town a similar experience that has developed successfully in recent years to become an international benchmark in the sector. The mayor of San Javier accompanied by the coordinating councilor of the project, Rubén Pérez and the councilor for Finance and Commerce, Héctor Verdú, delivered the Plenary agreement on the twinning between San Javier and Ponte de Sor to its mayor, Hugo Hilário, who already He had visited San Javier with a Portuguese delegation in the summer of 2019 on the occasion of the July 25 celebration in Santiago de la Ribera to prepare the future collaboration between the two municipalities. During his visit to Ponte de Sor, Mayor José Miguel Luengo had the opportunity to meet with the Secretary of State for Defense of the Portuguese Republic, Jorge Seguro Sanches, who showed the support of the Portuguese government for the twinning between the two municipalities that has among its main objectives, the shared organization of the Iberian Air Summit Aeronautical Fair based in both municipalities in annual shifts. The presentation of the project "San Javier, city of the air", which was broadcast via streaming, took place at the Ponte de Sor Arts and Culture Center in an event attended by local authorities, businessmen from the aeronautical sector implanted in the area and the vice president of Airbus, Cesar Sánchez, among other guests.
Supported with abundant graphic and audiovisual material, Mayor José Miguel Luengo and Councilor Rubén Pérez outlined the guidelines of the municipal project to create a city brand based on the aeronautical tradition, both in its tourist and social aspects, with museums that include the collection of old planes of the Infante de Orleans Foundation, as business and aeronautical training. José Miguel Luengo pointed out the similarities that both municipalities have due to their historical connection with aviation, since this small town in central Portugal welcomed army aviation in 1919 as happened with San Javier a few years later.
Luengo highlighted the richness of the exchange of experiences that is fostering the twinning with this Portuguese town that has made its Ponte de Sor Municipal Aerodrome a reference infrastructure in the aviation sector and an aeronautical center of excellence, with an international school of pilots.
In addition, in Ponte de Sor they created the conditions to facilitate the implementation of companies in the sector, such as Tekever, HeliAvionics Lab and Fly Tech, among many others,without forgetting the launch of an Aeronautical Campus that will provide knowledge and research. Iberia Air Summit The mayor of San Javier, José Miguel Luengo highlighted the importance of the Portugal Air Summit in this entire process, which was launched in Ponte de Sor in 2017 and which brings together hundreds of leading companies and entities in the aviation and of aeronautics including meetings, presentations, conferences, exhibitions and air shows for four days, every year.
Luengo pointed out that the main line of collaboration between both municipalities will be the organization of this fair, which would be renamed the Iberian Air Summit and that it would be held alternately in the two municipalities.
In this way, San Javier would host every two years, international aviation and aeronautics news, attracting companies and experts from the sector, as well as important air exhibitions that will be seen by thousands of people. The objective of the two cities is to turn the Iberian Air Summit into the fourth aeronautical fair in Europe.
Luengo pointed out that "the union between Spain and Portugal at this Fair would be an economic boost not only for San Javier but for the region and for the Region of Murcia, with what happened in Ponte de Sor." The three most important aeronautical fairs in Europe today are the Salon du Bourget, in Paris; Farnborough AirShow, in England and the ILA Berlin Air Show, in Germany.
Iberian Air Summit intends to join this European circuit that generates an important economic impact in these cities where the main powers of the aeronautical world meet.
