A new bike lane of 7.5 km linking Las Brisas Veneziola in La Manga, San Javier (22/06/2010)

The mayor of San Javier, Pepa García, Councillor of Tourism and Beaches, Jesus Montesinos and the village headman of La Manga, Manuel García Ferré inaugurated this morning 7.5 miles of bike lanes in La Manga which runs parallel to Gran Via from the Km 11, in the area of urbanization Las Brisas to km 18.5 in Veneziola.

The inauguration was attended by the Councillor for the Environment, José Luis Espinosa and Security, Manuel Leal.

Pepa García explained that the new cycle lane has been constructed with own resources of municipality and municipal exclusively with an investment of 51,000 euros "which meant a saving of 123,000 euros over the budget amounted to 174.000euros external."

Garcia highlighted "both the security offered by this new infrastructure for cyclists as a substantial improvement in regard to sustainable mobility in an area as large as La Manga."

Jesus Montesinos, Councillor for Tourism and Beaches, which coordinates the bicycle lane in the town said the new rail adds a nearly 20 miles of bike lanes built during this legislature in the entire municipality.

Montesinos has announced that in the coming days will launch five new municipal lending points to 10 bikes each which will add a sixth already in operation.

He also recalled that people interested in using this service must register in any office or local tourist information point.

Advanced Montesinos already is working to standardize the existing bike path from the beginning of the municipality in La Manga to which opened today, which would complete the full term of La Manga de San Javier.

Our aim is to eliminate the double track gain unifying into one space and give continuity to the portions in which disappear, explained the mayor.

The ultimate goal is to connect all villages in the municipality through a bike lane that will continue to build in sections.

The village headman of La Manga, Manuel García Ferré junction welcomed the provision of services to La Manga, "and especially in this area because it was an old demand of the residents have a bike lane conditions."

García Ferré said that besides providing sustainable mobility the new bike lane is a further step in sport "because in La Manga you can swim, you can walk, and now cycling more safely."
