The City of San Javier save almost 900,000 euros per year with energy efficiency measures proposed by the Info (03/05/2016)

The energy audit carried out by the Institute of Development in the Region of Murcia (Info) in the municipality of San Javier includes a number of energy efficiency measures that will reduce by 75 percent the energy consumed by the municipality, which will save of 883,000 euros a year.

The Minister of Economic Development, Tourism and Employment, Juan Hernandez, today presented the Mayor of San Javier, José Miguel Luengo, the results of the energy audit, an initiative that is part of the European project European Local Energy Assistance (Elena-Fuensanta) and which aims to reduce energy consumption and emission of greenhouse gases and promote the use of renewable energies.

The Minister of Economic Development stressed that this program is "a sign of strong regional government's commitment to the environment and combating climate change. It's more than a declaration of intent, and translates into initiatives such as the Elena-Fuensanta program which is going to allow public administrations, and particularly local, mobilize an investment of 46 million euros in energy efficiency measures, "he said.

In the case of San Javier, these savings will be achieved through a series of proposed actions after conducting a full review of the command centers of the municipality, an analysis of compliance and the development of a light map.

Thus, the audit detected a total of 12,818 light points distributed in 878 areas and estimated the annual consumption of 8,354 GWh per year, which is a cost associated with electricity supply contracts 1,024,323 per year.

Among the proposed measures, the audit recoje improvements in electricity supply contracts, actions update the lighting installation to current regulations or a proposal for improving energy efficiency in lighting installation including the step of existing fixtures at present lED technology.

The planned investment to develop all these actions is 7,061,649 euros, with a return on investment of 6.75 years.

12 municipalities committed

These actions on energy efficiency, which many municipalities were designed to perform within its Plan of Action for Sustainable Energy (PAES), seeking to comply with the Europe 2020 agenda of the European Union, which includes reducing by 20 percent the energy demand through energy efficiency actions, getting 20 percent of the energy consumed comes from renewable and get 20 percent emissions reduction.

The Elena project was launched in December 2009 by the European Commission and the European Investment Bank (EIB) to support projects on energy efficiency and renewable energy, facilitating funding from the Intelligent Energy for Europe to help regions and cities to implement viable investment projects in the fields of energy efficiency, renewable and sustainable urban transport.

So far, a total of 12 municipalities have signed agreements with info within the Elena-Fuensanta Project, pledging to perform energy audits and therefore to develop the necessary actions to reduce their energy impact.

In total, it is estimated that can reach savings of the annual energy bill of more than 15 million savings in energy consumption between 50 and 55 percent, and a reduction of CO2 emissions nearly 12,000 tons.
