The public buildings of San Javier will have pictograms identifying people with cognitive difficulties (31/03/2017)

The building of the City of San Javier already has the first pictogram identifying people with cognitive difficulties that will progressively be placed in all public buildings in the municipality of San Javier.

This is the "Understand your city" project that this morning presented the mayor, José Miguel Luengo together with representatives of Aidemar and the Fundación Rafa Can, in the City of San Javier, coinciding with the next celebration of World Autism Day on 2 April.

The aid program promoted by Aidemar, with the collaboration of the City of San Javier, and the adhesion of the Fundación Rafa It aims to identify all public buildings with pictograms placed in visible places "with the aim of improving communication, independence, social interaction And accessibility, breaking down cognitive barriers and creating a friendly environment for people with difficulties in understanding oral speech, "explained Gabriela Lillo, a hearing and language teacher at Aidemar.

Gabriela Lillo recounted the positive experience in the center with the use of the first pictograms years ago "with a clear improvement in the expression and understanding of the environment" for certain users.

The experience in the center was followed by a second phase in the family environment and now in the urban, first with public buildings, to continue also encouraging the private sector to join this initiative.

The pictograms used are the Aragonese Portal of Increasing and Alternative Communication, ARASAAC, whose use is free, for its visual appeal and its universalization.

During the presentation, an appeal was made to businesses and private entities to hang up their identification pictogram so that they should only contact Aidemar or the Fundación RafaPuede that will be provided free of charge.

The mayor of San Javier José Miguel Luengo, who placed the first pictogram at the door of the building, reiterated the "social commitment" of the City Council and collaboration with entities such as Aidemar and Rafa Can to those who thanked this initiative to improve cognitive accessibility Which adds to the municipal commitment to improving physical accessibility through an agreement with Famdif.

Ana Ruiz, the mother of an autistic girl, was responsible for reading a manifesto in which she recalled that autism affects one in a hundred people and that of the five million autistic children in Europe, 450,000 live in Spain.

Ana Ruiz demanded from the Administrations a greater effort to understand and know the needs of an autistic, as well as a European Law of Accessibility that takes into account the cognitive and sensory needs of the autistic.
