The UPCT will prepare a study on the management of the drinking water service in San Javier (19/12/2017)

Researchers of Civil Engineering and other technical-economic disciplines of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) will carry out a study on the management of the drinking water service in San Javier.

This was announced today by the rector, Alejandro Díaz, and the mayor of the municipality of José Miguel Luengo, during a working meeting held at the Rectorate.

The first phase of the study and analysis work is expected to be completed before next summer, after which it is expected that the UPCT researchers will also collaborate in the elaboration of a municipal ordinance on water management and in the drafting of the specifications of service conditions for the coming years.

"The study will serve as technical and qualified advice for decision making on the new model of municipal management of water service whose current concession, with the company Hidrogea, ends in mid-2019," explained the mayor of San Javier.

Luengo pointed out that he does not rule out the municipalization of the service as is currently the case in La Manga del Mar Menor, which is not included in the concession, if the UPCT study so advises.

"Our intention is to take advantage of the termination of the contract to restructure the entire service for an optimal management of a basic resource such as water," added the mayor of San Javier, who expressed his intention to reach a more social management model that allows the receipt of water to the neighbors and introduce bonuses that guarantee access to the service to the entire population.

"We will study all the formulas from our experience in water supply systems, with a technical approach, rigorous and multidisciplinary," said the director of the School of Roads and Mines, Manuel Alcaraz.

"This collaboration is a magnificent opportunity to demonstrate the potential in knowledge transfer of our researchers", said the rector Alejandro Díaz.

"Hopefully it will be useful for the residents of San Javier," he added.

"We trust in the success of this synergy and in the endorsement of objectivity that the UPCT will contribute to such a sensitive study," the mayor added.
