The Atalayón will have one of the first points of access of boats to the Mar Menor (06/02/2018)

The Atalayón, in Santiago de la Ribera will have one of the first four points of free access of vessels to the Mar Menor that will build the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia, framed in the Plan for the Management of Uses of the Mar Menor, with an investment of 208,000 euros co-financed by the European Union.

The Minister of Presidency and Development Pedro Rivera accompanied by the mayor of San Javier, José Miguel Luengo, presented this morning at Castillico beach, next to Atalayón, the first phase of a project "which aims to eliminate illegal anchorages in the lagoon , facilitating the entry and exit of boats and jet skis through direct access to the sea ".

The users will be able to use these accesses freely introducing, in a safe way, their trailer until leaving the boat or motorcycle in the water.

For this, a strip will be delimited, which in the Atalayón will be parallel to the existing jetty, so that it does not interfere in the beach.

The access ramp, which will have a maximum width of six meters, will have two sections of different material, removable and joined by rings-cracks, with a section of prefabricated concrete and another of extruded plastic material recycled, partly submerged 0,5 meters on the seabed.

Counselor Pedro Rivera informed that the works have already received the reports from relevant Costas, so they are awaiting a tender "to make their execution as quick as possible".

Pedro Rivera said that this initiative is part of the measures for the conservation and preservation of the Mar Menor and helps to organize the uses of the lagoon by making recreational or tourism uses compatible with environmental values by promoting responsible navigation. "

The mayor of San Javier José Miguel Luengo stressed that this action, which adds to those already undertaken by the regional government in the municipality as the sanitation of the Paseo Colón or the construction of three environmental tanks, "gives an answer and alternative to the owners of vessels that will not be able to anchor illegally in the Mar Menor ".

According to the adviser Pedro Rivera, there are currently some 2,500 vessels anchored in the Mar Menor, which is being phased out, to reduce both the visual and environmental impact in the lagoon.

The construction of boat access points begins with this first phase that includes four points in the Atalayón, Los Urrutias, Islas Minores and Playa Honda, whose works will be tendered immediately, and a second future phase with four other accesses in the other shore of the Mar Menor.

At the presentation of this morning in El Atalayón, Santiago de la Ribera, also attended the general director of the Mar Menor, Antonio Luengo, the head of the Demarcation of Coasts, Francisco Marín, the maritime captain of Cartagena, Oscar Villar, the councilor of Tourism of San Javier, Antonio Martínez, and the presidents of the sailing, canoeing and nautical motorcycle clubs of the Region of Murcia.
