Approved Conservation Management Plan and the SPA Grosa Island in San Javier (01/10/2010)

The Governing Council has adopted Conservation Management Plan and the Special Protection Area (SPA) Isla Grossa, in the municipality of San Javier, to carry out measures to prevent disturbance to birds, keep them in their habitat and ensure their survival and reproduction.

These actions will be determined by the Autonomous Community, through the Ministry of Agriculture and Water, under the ecological habitat and species in the area.

The Management Plan states that the reserve area will be composed of the mainland of Grosa Island and the islet of El Farallon, totaling just over 17 hectares, and a zone of 'marine buffer' of about 300 meters around.

The Plan includes the development of Monitoring and Research Programs Scientific Management, Habitat Management and Monitoring of Public Use, Education and Environmental Awareness and Monitoring Assessment and Management.

The designation of protected area Grosa Island is due to meeting criteria for the species SPAs Audouin Gull.

Besides this, the Management Plan aims to ensure conservation and habitat restoration of 21 priority species of birds in the area, as the petrel in Europe or shag, and 30 regular arrival of migratory species and other regional importance, such as Grey Heron, Shelduck or the Kentish plover.

The area already had previously regional environmental protection, as part of the Department of Protection of Wildlife 'Isla Grossa, Ant and the Dove' and the countryside 'islands and islets of the Mediterranean', with the designation Place of Community Importance (SCI).

75 percent of the population of Audouin's Gull is concentrated in the Mediterranean.

This species, listed as "vulnerable" in the Region of Murcia, is included in the Birds Directive, which sets out the species which are subject to special conservation measures concerning their habitat in order to ensure their survival and reproduction.
