Mephisto Theatre Cubans have a Caribbean version of "Fuenteovejuna" Lope de Vega (09/08/2011)

Lope de Vega wrote in 1610 about the rise of a people against the abuse of power by a Commander, an argument that after 4 centuries continues in full force.

Mephisto Theatre, takes the action of the play to the Caribbean in an original version in which the people rise against the commander, who plays Vladimir Cruz (Fresa y Chocolate), which in this case, believed to be the earthly representative of God Chango warrior.

The Cuban version of this masterpiece of the Golden Age of Spanish drama recreates the Afro-Cuban culture with its religious charge, its colors, its aesthetic and expressive graphics, and rhythm.

The show directed by Liuba Cid, incorporating live music with drummers who play instruments such as Shekere very Cuban and religious or bata drum.

Mephisto Theatre reviews the work of Lope de Vega from the staging, with a radically different setting, but without changing the essence of the message or text, which we have added some quotes from the nineteenth century Cuban thinker, José Marti, Cuban and some references.

The set reproduces the paintings "The Jungle" by Wilfredo Lam, one of the most important Cuban artists of the nineteenth century, placing the action in "somewhere in the Caribbean."

Dancing and music are also present in this version that uses the text comedy with moments of strong dramatic tension, as the violation of Laurencia, the character played by the young Claudia Lopez.

Together with Vladimir Cruz and Claudia Lopez, guest actors, 15 actors and musicians act on this bill show hundred percent Cuban.

The assembly came at the invitation of the Festival of Almagro in the edition dedicated to Lope de Vega in 2009 to mount his works from the perspective of other cultures.

The show is coproduced by the Ministry of Culture of Cuba through the National Council for the Performing Arts.
