Major centers of San Javier and Cotillas Towers participating in a European exchange with over Portugal (08/04/2013)

The major centers of San Javier, and participate Cotillas Towers from 15 to 19 April in a European exchange with a senior center in the Portuguese town of Arganil to mark the European Year of Active Ageing and Intergenerational Solidarity.

The CEO of Seniors, Enrique Pérez Abellán, mayor of San Javier, Juan Martinez and Councilman Social Policy Cotillas Towers, Fina Almela presented today at the San Javier Town Hall twinning between three senior centers, one of the only 2 programs approved for Spain within the European project "Europe for Citizens".

In this first phase of twinning 50 people over Portugal visit Murcia colleagues, with whom they will share a busy schedule of activities that affect the central theme of active aging through the arts, music, food, sports, theater, customs and culture.

The inauguration of the twinning takes place on Monday 15 April in Cotillas Towers where he will spend the initial journey.

The program includes cultural visits to Cartagena and Murcia, and one day in San Javier, on Thursday April 18, dedicated to music and sports, with sports sessions on the esplanade Barnuevo, performances of dance and music and a boat trip by the Mar Menor.

The mayor of San Javier, Juan Martinez stressed the importance of "our greatest wish and can be protagonists of such European exchanges that have so far been more common among young people."

Martinez said that this twinning "pioneering and innovative" contributes to mutual understanding within the same European identity, including among the social group of seniors.

The mayor of Social Policy Cotillas Towers, Fina Almela also stressed the importance of these exchanges "with people who have a long life behind experiences" and recalled that the three participating centers already have a previous history of twinning as The Cotillas Towers was already twinned with Arganil, San Javier first and then from the 90s.

The CEO of Seniors, Enrique Pérez Abellán recalled that seniors who are now 17.4 percent of the population in Spain (over 65 years), are becoming more active due to increased life expectancy, and initiatives such as this.

He further emphasized the convergence in the development of this major project with youth and other social sectors of the two participating countries, contributing to greater social presence, all in the field of European integration.
