The Community surveillance intensifies Grossa Island and The Farralon (21/07/2013)

The Ministry of the Presidency, through the Directorate General for the Environment, will strengthen during the months of July and August the surveillance in Isla Grossa and The Farrallon, in order to avoid landing on the island order anchoring, underwater activities and navigation, and preserve their biological richness.

La Isla Grossa and Farrallon currently have a perimeter of protection to prevent the passage of ships through sensitive areas and people to the area of ​​land as uncontrolled access would cause serious loss of ecological values.

The monitoring service will run daily during the months of July and August, both on land and in the marine buffer zone and around both islands, although these control and monitoring tasks are active throughout the year.

It is estimated that this year will sail in the vicinity of these iconic islands of the coast of Murcia over 10,000 ships.

From the Department are advised to anchor and sail boaters out of the line of buoys that mark the buffer zone of the Island and the Farallon Grossa, avoid making unnecessary noise, annoying for other users and wildlife, collecting anchor respectfully with the seabed, sea pour no solid or liquid and respect the alpha flag vessels or buoys indicating the presence of divers under water and maintain the safety distance.

A divers are asked to be reported from the dive before making the dive and respect the specific rules, dive with authorization or authorized center or club, buoyancy control not to touch the bottom with their fins, prevent skidding your team and respect the distance to walls and seafloor.

Also asked to slow the descent to avoid stand on the merits, not feed or disturb observe living things, avoid entering caves because air bubbles adversely affect all the animals that live on the roof, and participate in efforts to conserve the marine environment.

Important natural

Due to its important and fragile natural values, in 2001 the island was ceded by the Ministry of Defence to the Autonomous Community, in order to adopt the necessary conservation measures to prevent spoilage.

Thus, several environmental protection figures at regional, European and international, that protect coastal enclave, which has abundant oceanic Posidonia, homogeneous and in good condition, which contributes to maintain the quality of waters and home to diverse marine species attractive for diving.

Between 2004 and 2007 took place the adequacy of former military installations to use them to research and monitoring of this environment.

Conservation actions were developed habitats, funded by a LIFE-Nature, to ensure reproduction and survival of Audouin's Gull (Larus Audouin), which by then had about a thousand pairs on the island, the third colony most important nesting worldwide.

Also addressed the development of a Management Plan for the Special Protection Area (SPAs), as a tool for planning and management of habitats and species present in the islets, and other actions among which are those to conservation and habitat restoration of storm petrel (Hydrobates pelagicus) and shag (Phalacrocorax Aristotelis).

Tasks and studies

In addition, the Department conducts and coordinates work to contribute to the conservation of Grossa Island and its marine environment, developing appropriate measures to maintain their condition.

Tasks and census studies highlight several species of seabirds, scientific ringing, management and study of habitats, environmental information, marine environmental studies and training sessions on ecobuceo.

These actions have a budget of about 70,000 euros.
