The Minister of Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs (MARM), Elena Espinosa, has reiterated the commitment of the Government of Spain investor to ensure water quality and quantity in the Region of Murcia, at the opening of the Sewage Treatment Station ( WWTP) of San Javier.
This extraordinary investment, he added, will imply the protection and revitalization of the productive sectors of the territory and therefore employment.
In addition, the Minister has acted as a witness in the signing of the deed of assignment of the works and facilities for the municipality of San Javier for use, maintenance, upkeep and operation.
During the event, Elena Espinosa has stressed the importance of this infrastructure is, with a total investment exceeding 21 million euros for the full recovery of the lagoon of Mar Menor, ensuring sustainable development of their environment.
The Minister said that the MARM developed, complementary, performances by an amount exceeding 33 million euros in the lagoon environment aimed to adapt and improve the coastal areas and the restoration, conservation, maintenance and protection of maritime-terrestrial public domain.
Some of these actions are already underway in the context of Plan E.
On the other hand, Elena Espinosa recalled that the Marmara is working to establish a cooperation protocol with the regional administration in the context of the National Water Quality 2007-2015.
This protocol will collect a set of actions divided into three groups:
· Works, to declare interest, related to the improvement and expansion of the sewage system and treatment in the city of Murcia.
This group would also include the collector's waist Mar Menor.
• A second annex to the Protocol amendments to address the appropriateness of different treatment plants to shed the obligations of a mass declared as a sensitive area, ie eutrophic or at risk of being located several of them in the environment of the Mar Menor .
• The third group refers to works of sanitation and cleaning of municipalities that were already covered in the General Plan on the subject by the regional administration.
Overall, this is a total investment by the Government of Spain, about 100 million euros.
Technical characteristics of the WWTP of San Javier
The plant has a treatment capacity for sewage flow medium, in high season, from 22,500 cubic meters per day (m3 / d) and facilities are planned for the expansion of this flow up to 30,000 m3 / day future, which means an equivalent population of 120,000 and 160,000 inhabitants respectively.
The treatment plant consists of three separate water lines for each of the processes (pretreatment, biological treatment, secondary sedimentation and tertiary treatment by filtration), which provides great flexibility of operation against the variation of flow that occurs in coastal populations during weekends and holidays.
The work also includes a storm tank and storage tanks of treated water.
Within the Comprehensive Treatment Plan in the area of Mar Menor, this action-along with the WWTP and the WWTP Los Alcazares and the Mar Menor Collector South-are complemented by a collector (currently in process environment), you can catch any circumstantial discharge treated or untreated discharges, and direct them to the emissary of the Mar Menor Sur, already built, all with the goal of "zero discharge" of waste water into the lagoon.
The infrastructure for this project includes an investment of 45 million euros.
