The new road, 2.6 kilometers long, is a significant improvement of road safety of the many bicyclists who travel this area of great potential for tourism

The Ministry of Public Works and Planning, through the Directorate General for Transport and Ports, has completed work on the bike path that connects the town of Santiago de la Ribera to the San Javier Air Base, and runs parallel the road along the Mar Menor, MR-F34 (from Santiago de la Ribera to Los Alcazares).

The new cycle lane, 2.6 km long, is a significant improvement in road safety for the many cyclists who travel this area of great potential for tourism, due to excellent weather conditions and terrain that invites the use of bicycles.

In this sense, the director general of Transport and Ports, Carmen Sandoval, said "the new road built by the regional government in addition to the eight miles of urban bike lanes which are already in the municipality of San Javier."

He added that "it expects to expand this infrastructure, because it is a very popular route."

Similarly, Sandoval said, "This bike lane meets the demand of a large number of cyclists traveling on the Mar Menor throughout the year and especially during the summer months."

In this regard, he recalled that since last season takes place in the municipality a bicycle hire service, whose main objective is to promote sustainable transportation among residents and visitors to the town.

With this action, Building aims to promote sustainable mobility in the region by cycling and road safety of both cyclists and the various drivers who drive on the highway linking Santiago de la Ribera to Los palaces, as the action, which involved an investment of 633,340 euros, has also included the refurbishment and strengthening of the pavement of this road.

The director general added that "the bicycle is becoming increasingly a healthy habit that is ideal for the environment, which is why we are developing various activities for citizens of the region moving in the best conditions and with maximum security ".
