Awareness campaign for the conservation of sand and Posidonia oceanica (26/08/2009)

The Southeastern Association of Naturalists (ANSE) and the Municipality of San Javier develop in La Manga, with the support of the Cluster Foundation, an information and awareness campaign aimed at tourists and residents, which highlights the natural values of the seagrass meadows oceanica and its contribution to coastal conservation emerged and submerged.

Throughout the month of August, three degrees in biology and environmental sciences are reported in different parts of the coast of La Manga (tm San Javier) on the importance of seagrass meadows and arribazones both for training and, above all, the protection of the sand.

The aim is to help change the traditionally negative view that many residents and vacationers have the presence of large deposits of sea grass on the beaches, far from being "junk" are a consequence of the good state of conservation of submerged coastal facade Mediterranean La Manga (considered Site of Community Importance and Specially Protected Area of Mediterranean Importance).

In addition to people briefed on the beaches, hundreds of residents and holidaymakers, adults and children have participated in trips to the lagoon of Mar Menor and Grossa Island environment for diving and known, at least briefly, the most significant natural values of underwater ecosystems, and the differences between the funds of the Mar Menor and Mediterranean.

The outputs have been addressed by ANSE, sailing aboard the Else.

Since the association points out that virtually none of the participants knew that the Mar Menor has figures of international protection, and very few had seen the seagrass meadows of the Mediterranean front.

Many of them have passed on their complaints about the lack of control over the use of motorboats in the lake.

Moreover, throughout the month of August, the exhibition "Dunes, a sea of sand" drawn up by ASEAN to the City of San Javier, is touring the hotels London (until 09 August), Doblemar (10 to 16 August), Mangal (17 to 23 August), Cabanna (24 to 30 August) and Abity (31 August to 06 September) to briefly show the evolution of La Manga and the sands, as well as the conservation status Current and associated flora and fauna.

ANSE regrets that, despite his insistence to different administrations, has not been made this year no coordination meeting (prior to the summer) between the towns of La Manga (San Javier, Cartagena and San Pedro del Pinatar) region and Demarcation Coastal to unify criteria for action on coastal conservation and the development of an information campaign across the front of La Manga, the most controversial claims about massive wrack removal of the entire coastline of the Region.

However, the association expects that in the coming months can resume cooperation between administrations in order for a joint project management and recovery of the sand and wrack in La Manga.
