A course at the University of the Sea shows the research and resources of the Mar Menor (01/09/2009)

A course at the Universidad Internacional del Mar will focus on research and resources of the Mar Menor in Murcia.

Separated from the Mediterranean by a sand bar 22 km long, the Mar Menor is a unique natural landscape in Spain, and the largest saltwater lake in Europe.

Circumstances that make this a particularly important role in its ecological aspect, as it attests to the fact that United Nations-designated as Specially Protected Area of Mediterranean Importance, to be one of the issues addressed by this initiative .

The course, entitled "El Mar Menor: Research and Resources", is directed by José Meseguer and Alfonsa Peñalver García Ayala, and develop aspects of indigenous organisms in the ecosystem, such as defense mechanisms, maintenance, reproduction and health.

In the aspect of the research are notable recent studies on seahorses and their reproduction, an issue which the Region of Murcia is considered a pioneer.

The course includes a section on the resources of the Mar Menor, which provides information relating to the production, transportation, manufacturing and nutritional and culinary properties of fish of high economic value, typical of the marine environment, such as golden sea bass, mullet or magre.

The course will be held in the town of San Javier (Faculty of Sports Science, street Argentina) from 14 to 17 September, and who are registered will be entitled to two free credits.
